Stilton cheese (made of real gold)

Stilton cheese (made of real gold)
Foodie cheese-makers have created what they hope will be an indulgent addition to your Christmas menu — a Stilton cheese made of real gold. Clawson Stilton Gold will sell for £60.87 per 100 g. slice, or £608 a kilo.(almost 1,000 US Dollars) — that’s 67 times more pricey than regular Stilton.

Taking the title of the most expensive UK cheese ever made, it would even cost £6 just for the cheese to top one cracker. Clawson says that the premium white Stilton is so expensive because it’s shot-through with a combination of real edible gold leaf and real gold liqueur.

They claim to have already been contacted by a Gulf-based oil sheikh and a famous pop star desperate to sample a piece of the unique cheese.

Pule (world’s most expensive cheese)

Pule (world's most expensive cheese)
Costing $1700 a pound, this cheese is made at the Zasavica Special Nature Reserve in Belgrade, Serbia (Pule being Serbian for foal). The reason for its price? Donkey’s milk. It takes about 25 liters of donkey milk to make one kilogram of the cheese, which is white and crumbly.

No other special ingredient goes into making the smoked cheese, according to the dairy’s manager. Its value is purely based on the going rate for the milk (around 45 dollars a liter). That said, pule isn’t produced commercially, so even if you’re a billionaire, there’s no point in rushing over to your local cheese shop to try to buy a slice.

Epoisses (the cheese that is so stinky that it was banned from public transportation)

Epoisses (the cheese that is so stinky that it was banned from public transportation)
One of Napoleon’s favorites, Epoisses is definitely one of the smelliest cheeses you can find. Just so you get an idea of its repulsive odor, you should know that Epoisses has been banned from public transportation vehicles all over France. It is made from raw cow’s milk and its rind is washed with pomace brandy.

Epoisses is a very smelly, runny cheese but if it starts to smell too strongly of ammonia, you should throw it away because it’s no longer edible. If it smells like someone who hasn’t showered in a week, enjoy!

Casu marzu (the cheese made with flying maggots)

Casu marzu (the cheese made with flying maggots)
Casu marzu is a sheep cheese popular on the Italian island of Sardinia. The name means “rotten cheese” or, as it is known colloquially, “maggot cheese,” since it is literally riddled with live insect larvae.

To make maggot cheese you start with a slab of local sheep cheese, pecorino sardo, but then let it go beyond normal fermentation to a stage most would consider infested decomposition (because, well, it is). The larvae of the cheese fly (Piophila casei) are added to the cheese, and the acid from their digestive systems breaks down the cheese’s fats, making the final product soft and liquidy. By the time it is ready for consumption, a typical casu marzu contains thousands of larvae.

Locals consider it unsafe to eat casu marzu once the larvae have died, so it is served while the translucent white worms, about one-third of an inch long, are still squiggling. Some people clear the maggots from the cheese before consuming it, while others do not. Those who leave the maggots may have to cover the cheese with their hands—when disturbed, the maggots can jump up to six inches.

Milbenkäse (the cheese made with mite excrement)

Milbenkäse (the cheese made with mite excrement)
Producing over 1.8million tons of 400 odd varieties of cheese annually certainly makes Germany a cheese powerhouse. Amongst all that dairy however, one particular cheese produced in Würchwitz happens to stand out from the rest due to its unusual production process that makes it a highly sought after delicacy.

Milbenkäse is a cheese made by allowing quark to sit amongst thousands of dust mites that transforms the cheese into a highly desired delicacy. The mites excrete an enzyme that ripens the cheese; after one month the cheese turns to a yellowish color, after three months it turns reddish brown, and after a year the cheese turns to a blackish lump, which is desirable to some aficionados. The flavor is characterized as being bitter; it is also suggested that the cheese may have curative effects that keep the people who consume it non-allergic to house dust. The mites are consumed along with the cheese.

Halloumi (the cheese that doesn’t melt)

Halloumi (the cheese that doesn't melt)
Halloumi is a traditional cheese from Cyprus, an island in the Mediterranean Sea. Halloumi cheese has a higher melting point than other cheese which makes it suitable for grilling and frying. You won’t find any BBQ in Cyprus without the use of halloumi.

It is also very common to eat halloumi together with watermelon in warm months. The juicy slices of the watermelon are quite refreshing while the slices of halloumi give the delicious taste.

Halloumi is also one of the dishes that are usually served within a Cyprus Meze and very often you also will see a few slices of halloumi accompanying a cold beer ordered in a taverna.

Vieux Lille (world’s strongest cheese)

Vieux Lille (world's strongest cheese)
The Teddington Cheese, a British cheesemonger that sells cheeses from around the world, awards only a few the euphemistic label “pungent.” The true meaning of this epithet is indicated by the fact that the icon for these varieties is a man in a gas mask.

If you asked them which is the strongest cheese in the shop, Vieux Lille would be a good contender for the super-heavyweight crown. With a pungent odor and strong salty flavor, this cheese is certainly not for the faint-hearted. The alternate names of “Puant de Lille” and “Puant Macéré” are a little more descriptive, the latter being literally translated as “stinking pickle.”

Woman gives birth after running a marathon

Woman gives birth after running a marathon
Amber Miller was nearly 39 weeks pregnant — expecting her second child any day — when she set off from the starting line of the Chicago Marathon. She ran and walked even as contractions started kicking in toward the end of the race. However, she managed to cross the finish line — and grab a bite to eat — before giving birth to her baby girl, June.

She finished the marathon in 6 hours, 25 minutes and 50 seconds. It’s not her personal best, but she did beat her husband.

Teenager gives birth during kickboxing match (didn't know she was pregnant)
17-year-old Pamela Vugts was rushed to the hospital following a kickboxing match, only to give birth to a healthy baby girl. Unbeknownst to Pamela, or her opponent, the youngster was seven months pregnant when she entered the ring. Following a kick to the stomach, the fighter began bleeding, triggering her trip to the emergency ward.

Vugts’ father offered kind words following the birth: ‘She has always been a bit heavy, but because she was having her monthly periods we thought she had just put on weight over the holidays.’

Brain-dead woman gives birth to twins

Brain-dead woman gives birth to twins
A pregnant woman who was declared dead after suffering a brain aneurysm has given birth to twins after her body was kept alive for a month on a respirator.

Christine Bolden collapsed while walking in Michigan, Detroit with her boyfriend and three-year-old son. Five days later the 26-year-old was pronounced brain-dead by doctors. But almost a month later she gave birth to twins after being kept on life support in order to save her unborn children. Miss Bolden, who also has an 11-year-old son, gave birth to Nicholas and Alexander – names she had chosen before her collapse –after a 25-week pregnancy. Her life support was turned off shortly afterwards.

New York woman delivers baby in elevator after being sent home by hospital
A 31-year-old New York woman gave birth to a baby girl in her apartment elevator shortly after hospital nurses told her to return home because they said she wasn’t ready to deliver. Ninfa Ramirez and soon-to-be father Armando Ortiz, 34, rushed to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx because Ramirez was experiencing labor pains. Nurses told the couple the baby wasn’t ready so they could go home.

Moments after Ortiz dropped Ramirez off at their Bronxdale apartment and headed out to run an errand, he was summoned back by Ramirez, who told him the baby was coming. They made it to the elevator, but the baby couldn’t wait.
Ortiz and two of his pals delivered Monserrath Ortiz in the elevator on the first floor, reports The Post. Ortiz called the delivery “a beautiful experience” and the glowing mother told the paper “it was a big surprise.”

Ramirez and her 9-pound, 8-ounce daughter were then taken by ambulance to Jacobi hospital.

Pregnant woman gives birth on jail floor after arrest

Pregnant woman gives birth on jail floor after arrest
The heroic staff of a Californian sheriff’s office resuscitated the newborn baby of a woman who gave birth on a jail floor after her arrest for being drunk and high on methamphetamine. The 29-year-old woman was being escorted out of the Santa Cruz County jail lobby when she suddenly and unexpectedly went into labor.

Delivered three months prematurely, the baby girl dramatically stopped breathing while jail staff waited for paramedics to arrive. Then, both mother and baby were taken to Dominican Hospital for observation. The unnamed woman was arrested for disorderly conduct and also for suspicion of being drunk and using methamphetamine. Staff at Santa Cruz County jail refused to book the woman because of her level of intoxication and because she was pregnant.

The arresting officers were instructed to transport her to the hospital where she was allowed to be medically cleared to be taken to jail.

Woman gives birth in Emirates airplane toilet... and names him EK
A mother who went into premature labour on a flight was forced to give birth in the airplane toilet.
The aircarft was forced to make an emergency landing in Vietnam after the Filipina woman gave birth to a boy. Two Filipina nurses on the flight rushed over to help with the mid-air delivery as the plane flew from Dubai to Manila.

After clearing the amniotic fluid from the baby’s mouth, nose and ears, oxygen masks were given to the pair. The baby was kept wrapped in cabin blankets and kept warm using the LED lamps attached to the passengers seats.

The mother decided to name the boy EK after the airline code for Emirates.

UK soldier unexpectedly gives birth in Afghanistan

UK soldier unexpectedly gives birth in Afghanistan
Hours after a British soldier in Afghanistan told medics she was suffering from stomach pains, the Royal Artillery gunner unexpectedly gave birth to a boy — the first child ever born to a member of Britain’s armed forces in combat. Britain’s defense ministry said the soldier had not been aware she was pregnant and only consulted doctors on the day that she went into labor.

The soldier, who had been in Afghanistan for five months , delivered the child at Camp Bastion, the vast desert camp in southern Afghanistan’s Helmand province where Prince Harry is deployed and a Taliban attack had just killed two U.S. Marines.

The U.K. does not allow female soldiers to deploy on operation if they are pregnant. Although the soldier’s child was conceived before her tour of duty began, she is not likely to face censure.

528 lb. woman gives birth in Romania

528 lb. woman gives birth in Romania
A 25-year-old woman weighing 528 pounds (240 kilograms) gave birth to her first baby at a hospital equipped to treat obese people. “The baby is the fruit of the love between me and my future husband who is slimmer, weighing just 70 kilograms (154 pounds),” said Victoria Lacatus. “I wanted this child with all my heart, whatever the sacrifice,” the Adevarul newspaper quoted her as saying.

The healthy baby girl, born by caesarian section, weighed 2.9 kilograms (6.4 pounds). Lacatus was admitted there from her village in southern Romania because the local hospital did not have any beds that could bear her weight. In Bucharest, three teams of ambulance staff and firefighters were needed to carry her into the hospital.

Popescu said Lacatus was being carefully monitored because she suffers from a thyroid problem and doctors said post-surgery complications could develop because of her morbid obesity.

Woman gives birth on the Eastern Freeway
A mother gave birth on the side of the Eastern Freeway after failing to reach a hospital before her baby boy arrived. Angela and her partner Shane were on their way to the Royal Women’s Hospital, but their baby just couldn’t hang on. Angela’s water broke just five minutes into the journey forcing Shane to pull over at the Doncaster exit, near Balwyn, and deliver little Alexander on the front seat of the couple’s Holden.

A Seven News camera crew happened to stumble upon the scene just moments after the birth. The new dad told Seven News reporter Emily Angwin that he literally caught his little bundle of joy as he was being born. The 27-year-old said Alexander was born, wailing and crying, all in five minutes, and described the situation as ‘intense’.

Portal Bookends
There are a lot of manuals for employees of Aperture Laboratories. But you don’t necessarily have to read them. Hey, we’re just being honest here. We used to hire smarter folks, but our death turnover rate is so high that we’ve had to lower our standards to the less-than-literate. But really, don’t bother reading them. It’s not necessary to do your job. Just follow Cave Johnson’s voice and you’ll be fine, okay? Take these bookends ($26.99), they’ll hold the books up. Why yes, they do look exactly like a test subject going through a portal on one side and out the portal on the other. Pretty clever, isn’t it? Are all of you folks wondering how that rock smashed this poor Toyota Yaris? Apparently, a lorry loaded with rocks accidentally dropped the 8 ton stone on the small car. “The driver said he looked in his mirror and saw the rock slipping but it was on the car before he could do anything. If anyone had been in it, they would not have stood a chance,” said a photographer who saw the whole thing. The good news is that the Yaris was parked, but the bad news came after the driver saw it.

Diana Durre of Chambers, Nebraska died after a 75-foot (23 m) Taco Bell sign fell on top of the truck cab she was in. The pole broke at a welded joint about 15 feet (4.5 m) above the ground owing to strong winds. The sign fell right on top of the quad-cab pickup. Diana was meeting a Wyoming couple to sell them some dogs. They had agreed to meet in North Platte, Nebraska at about 1 p.m., “right underneath the big Taco Bell sign.” North Platte’s Animal Control Division took two Yorkie dogs to the shelter. The Wyoming couple showed up after the accident.

Imagine a car hit and flipped by a wreckling-ball… something that could be seen in a lot of Hollywood blockbusters. But in this case it’s a real accident in the streets of New York City. A Dodge minivan that entered a closed construction zone in Manhattan was accidentally hit and flipped over by the wrecking ball as onlookers watched in horror and ran for cover. The driver escaped with minor injuries.

The woman who charges $60 an hour for spooning
It used to be that a hug was a comforting gesture of companionship between friends or lovers but one woman in Penfield, NY has turned cuddling into a business. Jacqueline Samuel, 29, opened The Snuggery in June 2012, a place where, from upwards of $60, clients can snuggle with the petite Master’s student in a strictly non-s#xual context.

Sessions of up to 90 minutes take place in a private room while friends and family members mill around the house offering protection from any over-enthusiastic clients.

His productivity went from 38% to 98% with the experiment.

The Japanese men who are seeking more and more ear cleaning parlors

The Japanese men who are seeking more and more ear cleaning parlors
Japanese associate ear-cleaning with their childhood and many of them are willing to pay to return to those carefree days if only for just a few minutes. That’s what makes ear-cleaning salons one of the most popular businesses in Japan right now.

Ever since Japan authorities decided to deregulate ear-cleaning as a medical profession, making it available without a medical license, hundreds of salons offering the service started popping up all over the country. The vast majority of clients are men looking to relax their minds after a stressful day, and travel back to the days when they used to rest their heads on their mothers’ laps for the occasional ear cleaning session. Three out of four clients claim it’s so relaxing they actually fall asleep while the kimono-wearing cleaners excavate the wax out of their ears.

Women who want to work in ear-cleaning salons have to become masters of the “mimikaki” (traditional cleaning tool), so they go through a one week course to acquire the proper ear-cleaning skills. They have to learn to remove just the right amount of ear wax, because it protects the ear canal, lubricates it and has antibacterial and antiviral properties. If all the wax is removed the canal is left vulnerable to a variety of outside threats.

The company who charges $100 an hour for having your house cleaned by naked maids
If you’ve ever asked your significant other to clean in the buff and you were rebuffed — and you happen to live in Texas — think about calling Lubbock Fantasy Maid Service. For $100 per hour, Melissa Borrett, who started the company in February, will clean your house in lingerie or completely topless. For $50 more, you can order two topless maids at the same time.

Despite the inherently s#xual nature of naked mopping and dusting, the company’s website says, “While we do offer nude maid service, this is not a s#xually oriented business.” But the shirtless Swiffering has caught the attention of the Lubbock Police Department, who says the business is in fact s#xually oriented, and that it is acting without the proper permit. “Just the fact that employees are topless or semi-nude in this case — it’s just not allowed,” Sergeant Jonathan Stewart told KCBD. “Without a permit it would result in a penalty of a $2,000 fine. Each day would result in another penalty,” Stewart said.

The company that offers hand-written personal notes

The company that offers hand-written personal notes
Emails are so common nowadays that they’re pretty much the expected form of communication. In fact, it’s that way for virtually all occasions, not excluding birthdays and holidays. However, emails can get pretty boring after a while, because no matter what font you choose, the emails are still in a “perfect” computerized writing. This takes away some of the personal touches in writing a letter.

Epistly is a service which lets you send a hand-written letter to whomever you’d like. No, this isn’t a delivery service specializing in hand-written letters, but the people at Epistly will hand-write those letters for you. Just enter in your message along with the address, and your recipient will receive that exact message, hand-written, in their physical mailbox. You can even enter in an email address instead, and Epistly will look to see if they have a matching physical address, or they’ll go ahead and ask the recipient for a physical address via that email address. Through this service, you can send those personal letters (with a nice touch because it’s hand-written) without having to take the time to write it out and mail it.

Some people hesitate to approach people and inform them that they should trim their nose hairs. Why? I have no idea. The company that offers a mobile hangover service in a bus
Hangover Heaven is a pretty simple service to use. The bus runs between 8 AM and 3 PM every day. Once on it, you can choose between two packages. There’s Redemption, including intravenous hydration, or Salvation, including intravenous hydration, anti-nausea and anti-inflammatory medications that have been proven to cure hangover effects, and vitamin supplementation. Well, you can’t really escape the IV, so you’ve got to go in there prepared for needles. An appointment can be booked through their website or on the phone, and they will come get you. Once the treatment is complete, you will be dropped off at the same place where you were picked up. Other services include coffee and refreshments on request, and iPads with headphones for entertainment.

This service would be really appropriate to rent for your bachelor party.

Amge, who lives in Nagpur, India, was named the shortest living woman at 24.7 inches on Dec. 16, 2011, just after turning 18. Dangi, 72, stands at 21.5 inches tall and was crowned the shortest man in Guinness’ 57-year history in February. The woman in labor who insisted on voting on the way to the hospital
Illinois resident Galicia Malone did not let a little thing like being in labor stop her from casting her vote on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012. Malone’s contractions were already 5 minutes apart, and her water had already broken, but the 21 year-old new mother felt so strongly about making her voice heard that she powered through hard labor in order to fill out her ballot.

“I was just trying to read and breathe, read and breathe,” Malone told WBBM Newsradio.

In Detroit, Michigan, an elderly couple was filling out an absentee ballot on Monday when the man suddenly died. A bystander sitting nearby performed CPR on the man until he finally revived several minutes later. His first question upon waking up? “Did I vote?”

The elderly man then sat up and finished filling out his ballot, telling his wife he only came back to do two things, to tell her “That I love you and that I finished what I came here to do … vote.”

The Hurricane victims who didn't let a lack of electricity keep them from voting
In the wake of the devastating Superstorm Hurricane Sandy, over a million homes and businesses were still without power on election day in New York and New Jersey. Many polling stations were among the damaged buildings, and gas shortages and a lack of electricity made getting to the polls difficult for thousands of people in New York and New Jersey.

The governors of both states invoked extraordinary measures to help voters participate in the election. People were allowed to submit their votes by fax or email in some places, and others were given substitute ballots at any polling station they could get to, instead of having to find their specific station.

In some places, voters waited in long lines to vote in generator-fueled tents.

8 Amazing Separation Walls

Hadrian’s Wall

Hadrian's Wall
Hadrian was born on January 24, 76 A.D. He died on July 10, 138, having been emperor since 117. Mementos of Hadrian’s reign persist in the form of coins and the many building projects he undertook. The most famous is the wall across Britain that was named Hadrian’s Wall. Hadrian’s Wall was built, beginning in 122, to keep Roman Britain safe from hostile attacks from the Picts. It was the northernmost boundary of the Roman empire until early in the fifth century.

The wall, stretching from the North Sea to the Irish Sea (from the Tyne to the Solway), was 80 Roman miles (about 73 modern miles) long, 8-10 feet wide, and 15 feet high. In addition to the wall, the Romans built a system of small forts called milecastles (housing garrisons of up to 60 men) every Roman mile along its entire length, with towers every 1/3 mile. Sixteen larger forts holding from 500 to 1000 troops were built into the wall, with large gates on the north face. To the south of the wall the Romans dug a wide ditch (vallum), with six foot high earth banks.

The Great Wall of Croatia

The Great Wall of Croatia
The town of Ston, Croatia, is protected by a wall three and a half miles long. This archaeological gem was built during the fifteen century while the region struggled for some margin of independence from the Ottoman Empire. It gradually decayed over time and was devastated by an earthquake in 1996, but restoration is presently underway.

The Great Wall of India

The Great Wall of India
Kumbhalgarh, the second longest wall on earth, can be found in the state of Rajasthan in Western India. Construction of the 36 kilometer wall began with the rule of Rana Kumbha in the year 1443.

Situated in the state of Rajasthan in the Northwest of India, work was begun by the local Maharana, Rana Kumbha. It took over a century to construct the wall and it was later enlarged in the 19th century. It worked as a fort until that period, but is now a museum.

Israeli West Bank barrier

Israeli West Bank barrier
The Israeli West Bank barrier is a separation barrier under construction by the State of Israel along and within the West Bank. Upon completion, the barrier’s total length will be approximately 700 kilometres (430 mi). The barrier is built mainly in the West Bank and partly along the 1949 Armistice line, or “Green Line” between Israel and the Palestinian West Bank. According to the Israeli human rights organization B’Tselem, 8.5% of the West Bank area is on the Israeli side of the barrier, and 3.4% is on the other side but “partly or completely surrounded.”

The Great Wall of China

The Great Wall of China
Beginning in the 7th century BC, a series of massive defensive fortifications were constructed along China’s northern border. Built to protect China from northern attacks, the walls stretched for thousands of kilometers, many joining together to become the Great Wall of China. Over several centuries, the wall and thousands of supporting structures were built across mountains, deserts, and rivers, eventually stretching more than 20,000 kilometers in length. Sections of the wall near large cities are well-maintained, but many remote areas are slowly being reclaimed by nature.

The Berlin Wall

The Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall was the physical division between West Berlin and East Germany. However, it was also the symbolic boundary between democracy and communism during the Cold War. The Berlin Wall was erected in the dead of night and for 28 years kept East Germans from fleeing to the West. Its destruction, which was nearly as instantaneous as its creation, was celebrated around the world.

Walls of Constantinople (Turkey)

Walls of Constantinople (Turkey)
The Walls of Constantinople are a series of defensive stone walls that have surrounded and protected the city of Constantinople (today Istanbul in Turkey) since its founding as the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire by Constantine the Great. With numerous additions and modifications during their history, they were the last great fortification system of antiquity, and one of the most complex and elaborate systems ever built. Initially built by Constantine the Great, the walls surrounded the new city on all sides, protecting it against attack from both sea and land. As the city grew, the famous double line of the Theodosian Walls was built in the 5th century. Although the other sections of the walls were less elaborate, when well manned they were almost impregnable for any medieval besieger, saving the city, and the Byzantine Empire, during sieges from the Avars, Arabs, Rus’, and Bulgars, among others (see Sieges of Constantinople). The advent of gunpowder siege cannons rendered the fortifications vulnerable, leading to the fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans on 29 May, 1453 after a prolonged siege.

The walls were largely maintained intact during most of the Ottoman period, until sections began to be dismantled in the 19th century, as the city outgrew its medieval boundaries. Despite the subsequent lack of maintenance, many parts of the walls survived and are still standing today. A large-scale restoration programme has been under way since the 1980s, which allows the visitor to appreciate their original appearance.

Conwy town walls

Conwy town walls
Conwy’s town walls are a medieval defensive structure around the town of Conwy in North Wales. The walls were constructed between 1283 and 1287 after the foundation of Conwy by Edward I, and were designed to form an integrated system of defense alongside Conwy Castle. The walls are 1.3 km (0.81 mi) long and include 21 towers and three gatehouses. The project was completed using large quantities of laborers brought in from England; the cost of building the castle and walls together came to around £15,000, a huge sum for the period. Today the walls form part of the UNESCO world heritage site administered by Cadw. Historians Oliver Creighton and Robert Higham describe the defenses as “one of the most impressive walled circuits” in Europe.

Wearing Too Long a Scarf

Wearing Too Long a Scarf
In the 1920s, Dancer Isadora Duncan was a ravishing beauty with a long, slender neck. She also enjoyed wearing long flowing scarves and going for drives in the French countryside. Unfortunately, that combination of desires proved to be fatal: while sitting in the passenger seat of a sports car, her red scarf blew back and got caught in the rear-wheel axle, snapping her lovely neck in two and killing her instantly.

Die Ironically: Owner of Segway Inc. dies on Segway
Call it a twist of fate, or just plain idiocy. James W. Heselden had recently taken charge of the Segway company – you know, those annoying, two wheeled devices that were supposed to be all the rage, but instead have been adopted only by postal officers and mall cops? Out for a victory ride, perhaps, Heselden accidentally steered his Segway off the cliffs near his home in England. As the old saying goes, live by the Segway, die by the Segway….

Jump Off Eiffel Tower in Parachute Suit Test
Franz Reichelt, a French tailor, was obsessed with his idea of creating a wearable parachute suit for aviators who might be in danger. He called himself The Flying Tailor, and arranged to have a test run for his invention atop the Eiffel Tower on Feb. 4, 1912, promising to use a dummy. It turns out he did use a dummy – himself – and horrified onlookers watched as he strapped on the para-suit and promptly plunged to his death. Thanks to YouTube, his first and final jump has been preserved for all to watch.

The man with the most extensive face transplant ever performed

The man with the most extensive face transplant ever performed
These are the incredible before-and-after pictures of 37-year-old Richard Lee Norris who was given the most extensive face transplant ever performed. Mr. Norris, who was injured in a 1997 gun accident, was pictured seven months after being given a new face, teeth, tongue and jaw in a 36-hour surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

For 15 years, Mr. Norris lived as a recluse in Hillsville, Virginia, hiding behind a mask and only coming out at night time. He can now feel his face and is able to brush his teeth and shave. He’s also regained his sense of smell, which he had lost after the accident. When he shot himself in the face in 1997, Mr. Norris lost his nose, lips and most movement in his mouth. He has had multiple life-saving, reconstructive surgeries which also replaced underlying nerve and muscle tissue from scalp to neck. Motor function is now 80 percent on the right side of the face and 40 percent on the left.

Isabelle Dinoire is a French woman who was mauled by a Labrador after she had overdosed on sleeping pills in May 2005. While she was passed out, Tania – the dog Isabelle Dinoire loved so much – came to her and started scratching and chewing on her face. There are speculations that the dog got frantic after seeing her master unresponsive and was possibly trying to wake her. After she was mauled, Isabelle Dinoire was left without lips and with part of her nose, chin and cheeks missing. She was scheduled to undergo face transplant operation which took place on November 27, 2005 at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Nord in Amiens, France. Isabelle Dinoire is the first person ever to have undergone a partial face transplant.

It was the first such operation in the United States and the third in the world. Wiens of Fort Worth, Texas was severely disfigured in 2008 when he came in contact with an active high-voltage power line. He was standing inside the cherry picker when his forehead made contact with a high-voltage wire. Transported by helicopter to Parkland Memorial Hospital, surgeons spent 36 hours over two days working to save Wiens’ life.

Wiens was left permanently blind and without lips, a nose or eyebrows. Doctors told the family that Wiens likely would be paralyzed from the neck down and would never speak or produce enough saliva to eat solid food. They put him in a medically-induced coma for 3 months. After awakening, he made unprecedented progress and left the hospital in the spring of 2009. In May 2010 he started walking. In March 2011, a transplant team of more than 30 doctors, including eight surgeons and doctors and nurses from multiple disciplines led by MUDr. Bohdan Pomahač, performed a full face transplant at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. It took 15 hours. Wiens’ sight couldn’t be recovered but he has been able to talk on the phone and smell.

The woman who had a face transplant after being shot in the face by her ex husband

The woman who had a face transplant after being shot in the face by her ex husband
Connie Culp is a 46-year-old Ohio woman who has had the first face transplant in the US after being shot by her husband. Her new look was a far cry from the puckered, noseless sight that made children shrink away in horror.

Culp’s expressions are still a bit wooden, but she can talk, smile, smell and taste her food again. Her speech is, at times, a little tough to understand. Her face is bloated and squarish, and her skin droops in big folds that doctors plan to pare away as her circulation improves and her nerves grow, animating her new muscles. Culp’s husband, Thomas, shot her in 2004 then turned the gun on himself. He went to prison for seven years. His wife was left clinging to life. The blast shattered her nose, cheeks, the roof of her mouth and an eye. Hundreds of fragments of shotgun pellet and bone splinters were embedded in her face. She needed a tube into her windpipe to breathe. Only her upper eyelids, forehead, lower lip and chin were left.

She endured 30 operations. Doctors took parts of her ribs to make cheekbones and fashioned an upper jaw from one of her leg bones. She had countless skin grafts from her thighs. Still, she was left unable to eat solid food, breathe on her own, or smell. Then, in a 22-hour operation, Dr. Maria Siemionow led a team of doctors who replaced 80 percent of Culp’s face with bone, muscles, nerves, skin and blood vessels from another woman who had just died. It was the fourth face transplant in the world.

No information has been released about the donor or how she died, but her family members were moved when they saw before-and-after pictures of Culp.

The man who had his face disfigured by a genetic disease receives a new face
These pictures reveal the amazing transformation of Pascal Coler, a modern-day Elephant Man. Mr. Coler’s face had been horribly disfigured by Von Recklinghausen’s disease, a rare genetic disorder. But in 2008, a team of French surgeons, headed by Professor Laurent Lantieri, gave him a new lease on life. The controversial operation, which involved replacing Mr. Coler’s face with that of a dead donor, took 16 hours, the News of the World reported.
In the operation, tissues, nerves, arteries and veins were all attached to the patient’s face.

Mr. Coler described the day of his surgery as the happiest of his life.

The man who had his face partially reconstructed after having his nose ripped off by a bear
A 30-year-old man was attacked by a bear in October 2004. In the bear attack a large section of the man’s face was ripped off and doctors decided to attempt a transplant after skin grafts from his arm failed. The face donor was a 25-year-old man who had died in a traffic accident. After consent was obtained from the donor’s family, the transplant operation was performed in April 2006.

Professor Shuzhong Guo from Xijing Hospital and Fourth Military Medical University in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, China led the team of plastic surgeons.

During an 18-hour operation, they re-connected arteries, veins and nerves and repaired the nose, upper lip, and sinuses. Four different drugs were administered to reduce the chances of tissue rejection.

The teenager who had a new face for the first time since a fire accident when he was just a baby

The teenager who had a new face for the first time since a fire accident when he was just a baby
This is the incredible moment when a teenager who underwent Turkey’s first facial transplant sees his new face for the first time. Ugur Acar, 19, suffered serious burns to his face during a house fire when he was just 40 days old. He had a cosmetic procedure to repair his face in 2012 at Akdeniz University’s School of Medicine in southern Turkey. His face was freshly shaven before he looked into the mirror, as he had been forced to grow a beard over the three weeks since the operation to avoid irritating his skin.

Doctors successfully transplanted tissue from the face of a 45-year-old donor to Mr. Acar. They are planning to discharge Mr. Acar from the hospital in 45 days.
