10 Amazing Shark Attack Stories

Posted by Cha Cha Brown On May - 12 - 2012

Every year, there are about sixty shark attacks reported world wide. These are ten of the scariest and most amazing stories of shark attacks ever recorded!

His Wet Suit Held His Skin Together

His Wet Suit Held His Skin Together
In 1963, freestyle diver, Rodney Fox, was taking part in a spear-fishing competition off the South Australian coast. While diving without oxygen, Fox was grabbed around the middle by a great white shark. Fox fought the shark hard, getting free at one point and having the shark return to bite him again. Fox then wrapped his arms around the beast and was taken for a terrifying ride under the sea as the shark tried to shake him off. The shark had Fox’s arm in his mouth, and when he pulled the arm out, his skin was shredded from the bone. Finally, after very nearly drowning, Fox got free and was pulled into a boat. His bones were visible on his right hand and arm, and his rib cage, lungs, and upper stomach were all completely exposed. His rescuers kept his wetsuit on, which kept his internal organs from spilling out, ultimately saving his life. Fox underwent four hours of surgery and received 462 stitches to put his skin back together, but he is still alive today to tell his tale of surviving an attack from one of the world’s greatest predators.

Bethany Hamilton Was Back On Her Board A Month After Losing Her Arm

Bethany Hamilton Was Back On Her Board A Month After Losing Her Arm
In 2003, Bethany Hamilton was age 13. She was Hawaii’s top female surfer in her age group and one of the best in the United States before being attacked on the morning of Halloween by a 14-foot tiger shark. Bethany was lying on her surfboard with her left arm dangling in the water when the shark came up from below and bit off her arm at the shoulder. Her friends were able to apply a tourniquet and get help, but she lost over 60 percent of her blood and endured many surgeries in order to recover.

Remarkably, losing her arm did not dissuade Hamilton from surfing, and within a month of her attack she was back on her surfboard. In 2005, Hamilton won her first national title at the National Scholastic Surfing Association National Championships. Her story later became the basis for a big budget Hollywood movie called “Soul Surfer.”

Man Killed In Front of New Bride While On Honeymoon

Man Killed In Front of New Bride While On Honeymoon
Just ten days after getting married, British honeymooners Ian and Gemma Redmond were enjoying a tropical beach vacation in Seychelles, when tragedy struck. Thirty-year-old Ian Redmond was snorkeling just twenty yards off shore while his new wife sunbathed on the beach. Redmond was attacked by a shark, which bit off one arm and destroyed one of his legs. It is thought that Redmond died instantly, though he was quickly pulled from the water into a boat, and a doctor on the beach applied first aid until emergency medical crews arrived. Redmond’s hysterical new wife was restrained by the crowds of people on the beach while workers attempted to save her husband.

Man Punches Shark In Face To Escape

Man Punches Shark In Face To Escape
Twenty-eight year old Hawaiian resident Joshua Holley was surfing at his favorite spot off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii’s North Shore, when a 10-foot tiger shark bit his left foot. Instinctively realizing what he needed to do, Holley hauled off and punched the shark twice in the face, and the shark swam away. Holley suffered some severed tendons in his foot which required 42 stitches to repair, but the shark did not bite any major arteries. In spite of his attack, Holley says he will return to the water and feels no animosity towards the shark, saying, “You have to remember when you’re in the ocean you have to respect the ocean, that’s where they eat, live, breed; we’re just visitors in their home.”

Diver Survives Attack By Fending Off Shark With Camera

Diver Survives Attack By Fending Off Shark With Camera
Conservationist and professional underwater photographer and diver, Russell Easton, was photographing a 12-ft tiger shark in the Bahamas when suddenly his camera’s viewfinder showed a huge mouthful of sharp teeth! The shark bit into Easton’s camera, so the diver shoved the camera further into his mouth and was able to swim away to safety.

Despite the terrifying incident, the diver says he doesn’t think the shark was trying to hurt him; rather, the shark was just trying to figure out what he was by using his mouth like we would use our hand.

Dolphins Save Swimmers From Shark

Dolphins Save Swimmers From Shark
While on a training swim about 100 metres off Ocean Beach near Whangarei on the North Island of New Zealand, lifeguard Rob Howes said he and three female lifeguards were surrounded by a pod of dolphins who were acting very strangely. The dolphins circled around the swimmers and began beating the water with their fins, causing the water to be a churning mass of dolphins and bobbing human heads. Howes managed to get outside the circle of dolphins, and that’s when he spotted a huge great white shark a short distance away. As the shark moved closer to the women in the water, the dolphins became even more agitated and “went into hyperdrive.” The shark finally swam away when a rescue boat approached, but the dolphins did not leave the scene until all of the swimmers were safely back on dry land.

Man Captures Attack On Film

In 1964, Henri Bource and two other divers were swimming with seals in the ocean off Lady Julia Percy Island in Australia, when a great white shark suddenly appeared and bit off his leg at the knee. His diving partners got Bource onto the boat, and incredibly, the rescue was videotaped.

Warning: this video is not for the squeamish!

Bource was an amateur underwater photographer and filmmaker, and he eventually took the film footage from the attack and reconstructed the other parts for a documentary called “Savage Shadows.”

Man Loses Leg and Becomes Shark Preservation Advocate

Man Loses Leg and Becomes Shark Preservation Advocate
On Aug. 4, 2001, while vacationing with his wife on Grand Bahama Island, Wall Street banker Krishna Thompson was attacked by a shark and dragged out to sea. When the shark pulled him under the water, Thompson knew he had to take action to save his own life, so he pried the shark’s mouth open and punched it twice in the nose. The shark released him and he was able to get himself to shore, but sadly his leg was so damaged it had to be amputated.

Now, nearly ten years after his attack, Thompson has become an advocate for the preservation of the species, saying that “Sharks set the balance for the whole ocean.”

Shark Attack Death Blamed On Reality TV Show

Shark Attack Death Blamed On Reality TV Show
In April 2012, a production crew for the National Geographic channel was filming the television reality show “Shark Men” off the coast of South Africa. Reportedly, they were attracting sharks to the area by dumping gallons of fish parts (“chum”) into the water. The production company had permits for chumming and filming, however, just a few days after chumming the waters, a local 20-year-old champion body boarder named David Lilienfeld was killed by a 13-to-16-foot shark in waters that had not previously seen shark activity since 1999.

Local residents were outraged, and the show’s research permit was immediately revoked. The show “Shark Men” continues to receive criticism and has been cancelled.

In March of 2012, a mother and her 15-year-old daughter were sitting on their surfboards off the coast of New Smyrna Beach in Florida when a shark suddenly pulled the teen underwater. Acting quickly, Valeh Levy grabbed her daughter Sydney by the shoulders and pulled her up onto her own surfboard. The shark continued to circle until rescuers heard the mother’s screams for help and chased it away. The teenager required surgery on her foot, but is expected to make a full recovery.

10 of the Worst Ship Disasters Ever

TAGS: shipwrecks, sinking, maritime disasters

We all know the story of the ill-fated RMS Titanic, but did you know that the Titanic had only the third-worst non-military loss of life ever recorded? There were two more disasters that ranked as even more deadly than the famous ocean liner, and that’s without even counting the military ones. Read on to learn about ten of the most terrifying maritime disasters ever documented.

MV Wilhelm Gustloff: Largest Loss of Life of All Time

MV Wilhelm Gustloff: Largest Loss of Life of All Time
In January of 1945, this German ship was hit by three torpedoes in the Baltic Sea while participating in the evacuation of civilians, military personnel, and Nazi officials who were surrounded by the Red Army in East Prussia. After being hit in the starboard (right) side, the vessel sank in less than 45 minutes. An estimated 9,400 people were killed in the disaster, making it the largest known loss of life occurring during a single ship sinking in recorded maritime history.

MV Doña Paz: Largest Non-Military Loss

This Philippine-registered passenger ferry sank after colliding with the MT Vector on December 20, 1987. With a possible death toll of 4,375 people, the collision resulted in the deadliest ferry disaster in history during peace time. While most of the passengers slept during the night of December 20th, the ferry collided with the Vector, which was carrying 8,800 barrels of gasoline. The impact caused a fire which quickly spread to the Doña Paz, as well as lighting the surrounding water on fire. The life jackets aboard the Doña Paz were reportedly locked up, forcing passengers to jump into flaming shark-infested waters in order to attempt escape.

RMS Lusitania: Sank in 18 Minutes

RMS Lusitania: Sank in 18 Minutes
This British ocean liner traveled the route between Liverpool, England and New York City, including a port of call at Queenstown, (now Cobh) Ireland. During World War I, the ship was hit by a German torpedo on May 7, 1915, and then sank within just 18 minutes of being hit.

The disaster killed 1,198 of the 1,959 people aboard, leaving 761 survivors. The sinking turned public opinion in many countries against Germany, contributed to the American entry into World War I and became an iconic symbol in military recruiting campaigns of why the war was being fought.

RMS Lancastria: Worst Loss of Life on a British Ship

RMS Lancastria: Worst Loss of Life on a British Ship
This British ocean liner was commandeered by the government during World War II. It was sunk on June 17th, 1940, resulting in the loss of over 4,000 lives, possibly many more. This is considered to be the worst loss of life in the sinking of a single British ship, and the bloodiest single engagement for UK forces (in terms of lives lost) in all of WW2. This disaster claimed more lives than the combined losses of the Titanic and Lusitania.

RMS Empress of Ireland: Worst Disaster in Canadian History

RMS Empress of Ireland: Worst Disaster in Canadian History
This Canadian ocean liner sank in the Saint Lawrence River following a collision with a Norwegian collier in the early hours of May 29, 1914. The accident claimed the lives of 1,012 people (840 passengers, 172 crew). During the early morning hours, the smaller collier collided with the starboard (right) side of the Empress due to heavy fog. Many people in the lower portion of the ship drowned instantly. The ship listed so quickly to the side that launching lifeboats became impossible, and only 465 survived.

MV Goya: At least 6,000 People Killed in 7 Minutes

MV Goya: At least 6,000 People Killed in 7 Minutes
This German transport ship had 6,100 documented passengers on board (and possibly hundreds more undocumented) when it was struck on April 16, 1945, by a Soviet submarine in the Baltic Sea during World War II. Just seven minutes after being struck by the torpedo, the ship sank, killing almost all of the passengers and crew aboard, either inside the ship, or outside by drowning and hypothermia in the icy waters. This disaster is largely believed to be the second-worst in maritime history, based on the number of casualties. The ship was loaded with women and children (only two children were among the 183 passengers who survived).

USS Indianapolis (CA-35): Greatest loss of Life in History of U.S. Navy

USS Indianapolis (CA-35): Greatest loss of Life in History of U.S. Navy
On July 30, 1945, shortly after delivering critical parts for the first atomic bomb to be used in combat, to the United States air base at Tinian, the ship was torpedoed by the Imperial Japanese Navy submarine I-58, sinking in 12 minutes. Of 1,196 crewmen aboard, approximately 300 went down with the ship.

The remaining 900 men faced exposure, dehydration and shark attacks as they waited for assistance while floating with few lifeboats and almost no food or water. The Navy learned of the sinking when survivors were spotted four days later by the crew of a PV-1 Ventura on routine patrol. Only 317 sailors survived. Indianapolis was the last major U.S. Navy ship sunk by enemy action in World War II.

MV Le Joola: Second Worst Non-Military Disaster

MV Le Joola: Second Worst Non-Military Disaster
This Senegalese government-owned ferry capsized off the coast of The Gambia on September 26, 2002, resulting in the deaths of at least 1,863 people. The sinking of the ferry Le Joola is thought to be the second-worst non-military maritime disaster in number of lives lost, after the Doña Paz.

The ferry was reportedly loaded to overcapacity, so when it ran into a storm it quickly capsized within five minutes of hitting rough weather. Of the estimated 2,000 passengers, only around 64 survived including only one woman (Mariama Diouf, who was pregnant at the time), out of the more than 600 female passengers aboard.

SS Mont-Blanc: Exploded And Destroyed An Entire City
This French freighter exploded while carrying ammunition in Halifax Harbour on December 6, 1917, causing the Halifax Explosion, and killing 2000 people in and around the city of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. The explosion was caused by a collision with the Norwegian ship SS Imo.

Entering Halifax Harbour on the morning of December 6, the SS Mont-Blanc struck the outbound SS Imo in the Halifax Narrows. A fire caused by the collision detonated her cargo twenty minutes later, causing a massive explosion that devastated the city and harbor.

RMS Titanic: Most Famous Disaster

RMS Titanic: Most Famous Disaster
Perhaps the best-known maritime tragedy of all time, the RMS Titanic was a passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912, after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, UK to New York City, US. The sinking of Titanic caused the deaths of 1,514 people in the third deadliest non-military maritime disaster in history.

On April 14, 1912, four days into the crossing and about 375 miles south of Newfoundland, she hit an iceberg at 11:40 pm. The collision opened five of her sixteen watertight compartments to the sea. Over the next two and a half hours, the ship gradually filled with water and sank. Passengers and some crew members were evacuated in lifeboats, many of which were launched only partly filled. Just before 2:20 am, the Titanic broke up and sank bow-first with over a thousand people still on board. Those in the water died within minutes from hypothermia caused by immersion in the freezing ocean. The 710 survivors were taken aboard from the lifeboats by the RMS Carpathia a few hours later.

You probably already knew that the Red Cross has done some great humanitarian work in the 149 years they’ve existed, but did you know they’re also responsible for some seriously great artwork? These recruitment and fundraising posters from WWI show an amazing variety of artwork over only a five-year time span.

All images are in the public domain and can be found in the U.S. Library of Congress Photo Catalog.

Of course, while these posters are almost 100 years old, the Red Cross is still out there helping victims of natural disasters and war. Even though the World War is long over, it never hurts to donate to the Red Cross where you know your money will be used for a good cause.

Wicked Pixelated Nude Swimsuit

Wicked Pixelated Nude Swimsuit
The designer mastermind behind the Pixel Swimsuit remains unknown, and while this swimsuit is just a prototype, it has been turning heads online (and at the beach). The comical beach wear is meant to look like a woman with censored parts, or, what p0rn looks like with a dial-up Internet connection. Either way, this swimsuit made us say WHOA! for its blatantly comical nature, and because we are really hoping to see someone wearing one of these at the beach soon.

Orrrr, maybe your mom won’t let you get a dog because of her completely fabricated allergies. Ugh, she never lets me do ANYTHING. Well you can fake it with a crocheted Chihuahua’s Head accessory made by Etsy seller LotsOfLoops. Bottle Betty is a new line of patent pending swimwear with an attached bottle opener. It’s crazy, I know, one would expect that a bikini with an attached bottle opener to be tacky looking. Bottle Betty swimsuits appear stylish, at least from their web site photos. But, it brings me to my original, head-scratching question, “Why?” This really must be a guy thing.

All I can say is that if you are too lazy to walk to the nearest poolside bottle opener, and really need to open that many bottles of beer, you can rest assured you won’t be in tiptop bikini shape for very long.

Facebook can be a wonderful tool for staying in touch with friends and family. Not to mention for spying on a few old flames. However, after a night of partying, when you were supposed to be taking care of your “sick aunt,” can get you into hot water. Whether you want to keep your lifestyle under wraps from your boss, your parents, or the police, you can be proactive and avoid being tagged in risqué Facebook photos with the Embarrassing Photo Sunglasses. Perfect for ensuring that your identity is well concealed, these shades black out your eyes before the picture ever makes it to the social networking site.

Tired of eyeglasses constantly sliding off the bridge of your nose? Sure you are; but wanting to screw the darned things on and actually doing it are two different things – both of them kinda nutty. This “edgy” implanted eyeglass mounting may look like a clever, creepy photoshop job but, as much as you’d like to believe that, pierced bridge glasses are as real as the pain of installation.

The concept was originated by James Sooy working with Oliver Gibson. Tiny magnets in the frames attach to flat areas on the bridge implant for a secure and exact fit. They aren’t available to paying customers just yet, but one thing is certain: people will want it done if only for the shock value.

From the testimonials I’ve read, the glasses make you feel relaxed while going on your day-to-day routine, but they don’t help you lose much weight. No more living in denial about the size of your waist line, thanks to this fantastic, albeit terrifying, guerrilla marketing initiative from the health club chain, Fitness First. Unsuspecting commuters in the Netherlands are faced with viewing their body weight in bright lights – quite literally – when they take a seat at this Rotterdam bus stop. Scary, to say the very least, but extraordinarily clever, and likely to increase membership numbers at the local Fitness First. The brainchild of Netherlands’ agency N=5, the initiative takes the concept of guerilla marketing to a whole new level.

The best helpers are ones that you don’t have to pay. The Canadian ad agency Rethink makes good use of bald commuters on rapid transit trains by exposing their heads for all to see.

VIP Gym thought images of a flabby, cellulite-ridden butt topped with a pair of love handles would be enough to make people want to “get up and run.” Glued to chairs in restaurants and cafes, the poster gives you the uncomfortable feeling that you’re seeing way more of strangers than you would like.

Whe costumers bend to read the little text it says:

“At this moment, you bum is completely exposed. If it were in a sexy pair of jeans, it would attract attention all the time!”

Okay, it isn’t a promotional product, but it is a clever way to make a poster interactive. The poster is purposely mounted so it droops over itself. When a curious passerby lifts it up, their personal smell is called into question. They get props for being funny, and for making a simple piece of paper into an interactive ad.

This guerrilla ad campaign wouldn’t stand a chance of flying in the US.

A floating afro sits at head-level behind a bus stop seat, just at the right height to make it look like anyone who sits there has quite an impressive head of hair. This poster by ‘Real Hip Hop’ is definitely an eye-catcher.

A huge interactive light box was mounted in the Seoul Sindorim Subway Station, the entrance way to a multiplex electronics shopping mall where various brands compete. Over 500,000 commuters use the station daily, making it the perfect place for an ad like this. Huddled together as if at a premiere, the paparazzi appear to be jostling and competing for the best celebrity shot. The celebrities, however, are the ones walking by; they automatically trigger a deluge of flashing camera lights. The accidental superstars then follow the red carpet all the way out of the station and into a mall, where there’s a Nikon shop conveniently located inside.

If I were shy, I wouldn’t be too happy about passing by this ad.

Website Offers $1M For Proof Of Sex With Jets' Tim Tebow
Jets quarterback Tim Tebow has steadfastly maintained he is a virgin while living the high-profile life of a professional athlete. Well, controversial website AshleyMadison.com apparently wants to challenge one of Tebow’s core beliefs. They’re offering up big money to any woman who can prove she has slept with the NFL sensation.

CNBC sports business reporter Darren Rovell tweeted the rumblings of a $1 million bounty. The company retweeted Rovell and issued a confirmation via Twitter, “@darrenrovell @TimTebow – It’s true Darren…we’re just worried it might cost us millions!” Ashley Madison provides matches for those seeking an extramarital affair. The company is described on its homepage as the “most recognized name in infidelity.”

Company Held Orgy To Reward Salesmen

Company Held Orgy To Reward Salesmen
A German insurance company decided to reward the success of its sales staff in a rather unusual way – with a prostitute-filled orgy. While most organizations might show their appreciation for their employees with a free night out or a generous bonus package, insurance giant Munich Re decided a night of sex was the best way to keep staff motivated. One of its divisions, Ergo, has admitted that an orgy in a Budapest spa was organized in 2007 to reward particularly successful salesmen, with guests able to take prostitutes to bed and “do whatever they like.” But a participant in the orgy has revealed that far from being a chaotic free-for-all, the occasion was extremely well organized, with prostitutes wearing color-coded armbands and receiving stamps after rendering their services. The unnamed man told German newspaper Handelsblatt, “After each encounter the women were stamped on the lower arm in order to keep track of how often each woman was frequented. The women wore red and yellow wrist bands. One lot was hostesses, the others would fulfill your every wish.”

School District Gives Away Camaro as a Reward for Good Attendance and Grades
In order to motivate student performance, a school district in Fort Worth, Texas, gave a 2011 Chevrolet Camaro to a student who demonstrated excellent attendance records and grades. Here’s how the game worked:

The names of 25 lucky students were drawn at the district’s TV studio. Students earned tickets throughout the year based on their academic performance. Better attendance and higher grades meant more chances to win.

Kenzie Deaton won the car. But she’s only 14, so she’ll have to wait a while before she can legally drive it.

Wanted Man Turns Himself In For Reward

Wanted Man Turns Himself In For Reward
Taliban commander Mohammad Ashan saw his face on a wanted poster and noted the reward was $100. So he grabbed a poster and went to a police checkpoint in the district of Sar Howza, Afghanistan, where he demanded the reward. Officials arrested him instead. He was wanted for plotting attacks on Afghan security forces.

When U.S. troops went to confirm that Ashan had in fact come forward to claim the finder’s fee, they were initially incredulous. “We asked him, ‘Is this you?’ Mohammad Ashan answered with an incredible amount of enthusiasm, ‘Yes, yes, that’s me! Can I get my award now?’” recalled SPC Matthew Baker. A biometric scan confirmed that the man in Afghan custody was the insurgent they had been looking for. “This guy is the Taliban equivalent of the “Home Alone” burglars,” one U.S. official said.

World's Most Generous Boss Gives a $15 Million Reward to Employees
An Australian boss has stunned his staff by giving them a staggering $15 million in bonuses as a thank you for their service. Ken Grenda and his sons gave the cash rewards to almost 2,000 employees after the sale of their 66-year-old Melbourne-based bus company, Grenada Corp. Some employees were so shocked by the gesture that they called their banks to ask if there had been a mistake in their statements. The bonuses, averaging $8,500, were based on the length of service. Some workers received $30,000 to $100,000 each. The Grenda family had raked in $400m after selling the company to Ventura, another transport company in 2011.

PETA Offers $1 Million Prize for Lab-Grown Meat

PETA Offers $1 Million Prize for Lab-Grown Meat
No stranger to controversy and publicity stunts, PETA is back – and this time, the animal rights group is putting money where its mouth is: PETA is offering a $1 million reward to the first scientist to produce, and bring to market, lab-grown meat.

Scientists around the world are researching or seeking funds to research ways to produce meat in the laboratory—without killing any animals. In vitro meat production would use animal stem cells that would be placed in a medium to grow and reproduce. The result would mimic flesh and could be cooked and eaten. Some promising steps have been made toward this technology, but we’re still several years away from having in vitro meat be available to the general public.

Would you eat lab-grown meat?

The Group Of Prisoners Who Won A Trip as a Prize But Couldn't Use It
A group of prisoners was thrilled when they won first prize in a national reading contest. But then they realized they would not be able to claim their reward – a trip to Scotland. Instead the 12, who won the Penguin/Orange Reading Group prize, were visited by author Nick Hornby at High Down prison in Surrey, England.

They will also pocket £200 worth of books. The second-placed team from the Isle of Islay Book Group was given first prize – an all-expense-paid trip to the Edinburgh Book Festival which starts next week.
